Real‐Time Monitoring of Bubbles and Crashes

چکیده
Given the financial and economic damage that can be caused by collapse of an asset price bubble, it is critical importance to rapidly detect onset a crash once bubble has been identified. We develop real-time monitoring procedure for detecting episode in time series. adopt autoregressive framework, with regimes modelled explosive stationary dynamics, respectively. The first stage our approach monitor bubble; conditional on which, we real as new data emerges. Our detection employs statistic based different signs means differences associated regimes, values are obtained using training period data. show desirable asymptotic properties terms its ability while never indicating earlier than one occurs. Bubbles and Market Crashes
We present a dynamical theory of asset price bubbles that exhibits the appearance of bubbles and their subsequent crashes. We show that when speculative trends dominate over fundamental beliefs, bubbles form, leading to the growth of asset prices away from their fundamental value. This growth makes the system increasingly susceptible to any exogenous shock, thus eventually precipitating a crash...

These notes consider Abreu and Brunnermeier’s (2003) paper on the failure of rational arbitrage in asset markets. Recall that the “no-trade” theorem states that speculative bubbles cannot exist in a world with only rational traders even if there is asymmetric information, so long as these traders share a common prior. Believers in the efficient market hypothesis argue that even if there are als...
متن کاملBubbles, Crashes and Risk
In an asset-pricing model, risk-averse agents need to forecast the conditional variance of a stock’s return. A near-rational restricted perceptions equilibrium exists in which agents believe prices follow a random walk with a conditional variance that is self-fulfilling. When agents estimate risk in real-time, recurrent bubbles and crashes can arise. These effect are stronger when agents allow ...
متن کاملMarket Bubbles and Crashes
Episodes of market crashes have fascinated economists for centuries. Although many academics, practitioners and policy makers have studied questions related to collapsing asset price bubbles, there is little consensus yet about their causes and effects. This review and essay evaluates some of the hypotheses offered to explain the market crashes that often follow asset price bubbles. Starting fr...
متن کاملEffects of Reputation in Bubbles and Crashes
We analyze the stock market by modeling it as a timing game among arbitrageurs for beating the gun. We assume that (1) arbitrageurs are behavioral with a small probability, (2) the bubble soft-lands, and (3) the postcrash price increases as the X-day is postponed. Due to these assumptions, the effect of reputation assumes importance because any rational arbitrageur is willing to build a reputat...
